Everywhere you look, it is happening. Prime time, reality TV, the big screen. Musical theatre has reached the masses, and the masses are eating it up. Flash mobs are popping up all over the internet in everything from airline and cell phone commercials to wedding proposals, and one thing is for certain; people want to sing and dance.

On Saturday September 28th from 1-5 at the Gate House Theatre in Port McNiell you can do just that.

Joey Clarkson, a popular musical theatre instructor from the Comox Valley, will be back for her second engagement at the theatre, this time putting some “Glee” in the voices and some bounce in the steps of the 13 years old and up crowd.

“This is going to be a blast!” smiles Clarkson. “I’ll be joining in on the Open Mic session at the theatre that night which means the musical theatre students will be able to perform with us in front of an audience! We will spend 5 hours working on the music and moves that have been causing  a sensation. You don’t have to have any experience at all, the point is to get out there and give it a try!”

Teaching comes naturally to this young entrepreneur. Climbing the ladder from a small Comox Valley theatre instruction company where she instructed beginner classes at 13, with private vocal students at 16, she directed and produced her first full length musical at 18, wrote and produced her first full length musical at 20, is Rainbow Theatres youngest musical director for the past 3 years, music is certainly her passion. Her students number in the hundreds, and one of them has even made his way onto the Disney channel.

Not one to let an opportunity slip away, this energetic young lady has combined her classes with music tours of England, Scotland and Ireland promoting her recording career. Signed under the Highland Music Multimedia label, Joey’s singles “Get out” and “Save Yourself” are enjoying airplay on stations around BC, across Canada, and as far afield as Germany. She has been featured on BBC Radio Norwich in England, where she has been interviewed and performed her original music on air. Her tour documentary premiered at the BBC Music Film Festival last fall.

“I started taking the singer-songwriter lifestyle more seriously when I was 15,” says Clarkson, who wrote her first song in Grade 9, and eventually signed a production contract with Highland Music Multi-Media, under Susie McGregor and Andrew Lorimer.

“They became my producers,” says Clarkson. “I spent a couple of years learning from them and attending conferences and then doing studio time here and there. In 2010 I released my first album with my own material entitled “Joey” and just this summer I released a second album with all material I’ve written over the last couple of years since I’ve been on the road,” explains Clarkson. “It’s called See You, Love You, Behave Yourself—that’s what my grandma says to me when I leave the country!” Clarkson’s album is available for download on iTunes.

If you would like to spend an afternoon of Glee and good times please register early. The 5 hour workshop fee is $40.For more information on Joey, her music and her programs, you can visit www.joeyclarksonmusicaltheatre.com
