Musical Theatre Workshop and Concert

slideJoin the fun of a  musical theatre workshop with Joey Clarkson August 13 12-5 at the Gate House Theatre in Port McNeill.

At just 23, Joey Clarkson has already been teaching musical theatre for 10 years. Her unique blend of youth, experience and passion for her craft has made her a very popular teacher in Canada, the UAE, Ireland and the UK. Equally at home instructing young children or teens, her enthusiasm is infectious. Joey’s programs offer funfilled, inspirational adventures into the land of music. Her high energy workshops are a hit with the school-age crowd. Tuesday’s workshop introduces the students to voice work, script work, and basic choreography ending  in a short presentation for family and friends. Clarkson has been added to the prestigious  ArtStarts Artist in the Classroom roster, a provincial catalogue of touring artists supported by ArtStarts.

Clarkson’s brand of instruction is popular with adults as well.

“Joey has boundless energy, is musically gifted with apowerful voice, and is simply amazing with kids. She ensures that everyone gets lines and is able to engage even the shiest child. She is also gifted indealing with kids who are a bit of a handful.  Over the last five years I have seen her turn ‘trouble-makers’ into leaders by re-focussing their energies into things constructive.  This is anopportunity not many children have available to them and we are so thankful this experiencewill be part of their life story.” says Monica Yorke of Delta BC, who has had children in Clarkson’s workshops for the past 5 years.

.”It doesn’t matter how old you are, you have power to do great things. It is this ideal that I impress upon my students, building confidence and self worth through musical theatre.”

Clarkson will be joined by her cousin, touring pianist, Elizabeth Hornby.

Hornby’s evocative, cinematic solo piano music is inspired by a childhood  spent growing up in West Dorset, England, and a love of its beauty, romance and sheer wildness.   Her second album ‘Butterfly Island’ – a follow up to her first release, 2012’s ‘Lady of Lewesdon Hill’ – further develops her ability to compose music that sings the landscape.   ‘Butterfly Island’ forms the musical backdrop to the national tour of the ‘A Graceful Death’ arts exhibition, and is described by its curator Antonia Rolls as “uncomplicated, unsentimental and moving.”  Elizabeth’s musical influences include Michael Nyman, Rachel Portman and Debussy.  Live shows involve semi-improvised rolling, evolving sonatas, and confidently span the ambient and the classical.

Hornby an accomplished teacher as well as musician trained in the KPM Approach to Children in India after successfully graduating at the University of Kent in 2005.

The 2 young women will perform their original compositions in a concert for all ages, at the Gate House Theatre in Port MacNeill  August 13 at 8:00. Admission by donation.
